The Three Magic Words Your Teammates Need to Hear
Learn the three simple calls that give your teammates eyes in the back of their heads and keep your team in possession of the ball.
Imagine you are playing in a game. The ball is rolling toward you. You turn your body to trap it.
Can you see the defender sprinting up behind your back?
No, you cannot. You do not have eyes in the back of your head. You are busy looking down to make sure you control the ball.
But your teammate can see everything. They are facing you, and they can see the whole field.
If your teammate stays quiet, you might get tackled from behind. But if your teammate yells the right word at the right second, they can save you.
Talking on the soccer field is not just about cheering. It is about being a teammate's second pair of eyes. To do this well, you only need to learn three simple calls.
The Three Calls That Save the Ball
When you see the ball rolling toward a teammate, look at the space behind them. Then, shout one of these three calls:
- "Man on!"
You say this when a defender is running up fast behind your teammate. It means: "Watch out! Danger is right behind you. Do not try to turn around. Shield the ball, or pass it back to me quickly."
- "Turn!"
You say this when there is no defender near your teammate. The space behind them is totally open. It means: "You have room to run. Spin around with the ball and go forward." This is the best call a teammate can hear. It lets them go on the attack immediately.
- "Time!"
You say this when a defender is nearby, but they are not running fast or trying to tackle yet. It means: "Do not panic. You do not need to rush. Take a soft touch, look up, and make a smart choice." Many young players rush because they think they are about to get tackled. Telling them they have "time" helps them stay calm.
Why "Pass!" Is Not Enough
Many players only make one sound on the field. They yell "Here!" or "Ball!" or "Pass!"
These calls are not very helpful. They only tell your teammate that you want the ball. They do not help your teammate understand the defender's position.
If you use the three magic calls instead, you give your teammate real information. You help them make a decision before they even touch the ball.
How to Speak on the Field
Knowing the words is only the first step. You also have to say them the right way. Follow these three rules:
- Say it early. Do not wait until your teammate traps the ball. Shout the word while the ball is still rolling toward them. This gives them time to think.
- Shout it loud. Do not whisper. Use your loudest shouting voice. There is a lot of noise during a game, and your teammate needs to hear you clearly.
- Use their name. If you can, say their name first. Shouting "Leo, turn!" or "Maya, man on!" is much better than just shouting the word. It makes sure they know you are talking to them.
It might feel a little strange to yell loudly during practice. That is normal. But the best players in the world do this every single minute of every game.
Try it in your next scrimmage. Pick just one teammate and try to help them with these three calls. Once you start helping them see the field, they will start doing the same for you.
